In the fourth instalment of our video series, Dr. Caroline (Carrie) Arbuckle MacLeod discusses coffins in ancient Egypt, including evidence for the methods of manufacture, the materials used, and what we can learn about the craftspeople who made them.
Caroline (Carrie) Arbuckle MacLeod is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She received her B.A in Classical history and archaeology from UBC, her MPhil in Egyptology from Oxford University, and her PhD in archaeology from the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at the University of California, Los Angeles. At UBC, she has taught courses on ancient Egyptian archaeology, religion, and Middle Egyptian hieroglyphs, and is currently working on the Database of Religious History. Her research focuses on the study of ancient Egyptian coffins, and how craftspeople adapt their practices to shifts in religion, political revolutions, warfare, and trade. She has worked on excavations in Egypt and Greece, and is the director of the Museology and Egyptian Material Culture summer field school held at the Museo Egizio, in Turin, Italy. In addition to coffins, she also studies digital approaches to archaeology, and the perception and practice of women archaeologists working in Egypt and the broader Mediterranean.
